Learning Assistant

Learning Enrichment and Disability Services employs Learning Assistants who assist in providing the services and programs of the Beloit College Learning Enrichment and Disabilities Services and Dean of Students office. These positions report to the Director as well as the department coordinator and the staff of the Dean of Students office. Each position provides general office support and more importantly has a significant paraprofessional assignment. All Learning Assistant roles will have the opportunity to develop and apply the Integrated Learning Outcomes as identified in the College strategic plan as essential skills for Beloit College students. The Integrated Learning Outcomes are described here: http://2sf5.joker47.net/offices/academic-affairs/integrated-learning-outcomes/ Effective Communication: Learning Assistants report to the Director and Department Coordinator of Learning Enrichment and Disability Services and/or the Dean of Students staff. They will communicate professionally, accurately, and in a timely manner using a variety of platforms with supervisors, co-workers, staff, faculty, prospective students and parents. Creative Problem Solver: Learning Assistants work to provide information, tools and solutions for those who seek the services of the offices. They will attempt to provide solutions to broader campus challenging/ill-defined problems by applying sound reasoning, critical thinking, creativity, analysis, etc. Productive Collaboration: Learning Assistants work in a team and articulate goals and collaborate on ways to reach them. They will develop an understanding of larger work-related matters such as human motivation, conflict management, group dynamics, and effective work processes. Intellectually & Professionally Agility: Learning Assistants must follow established policies, procedures, practices and communicate professionally. L.A.s act resourcefully to navigate complex situations when supervisors are not available. Lastly, they use accomplishments and mistakes to further their own knowledge and competence. LEARNING ASSISTANT – Academic Enrichment Activities Specific Duties: - Provide activities on academic enrichment topics for students (time management, note-taking, test-taking strategies, stress management, public speaking, etc.) each semester - Work individually with students who want assistance with improving study skills and strategies (as necessary) - Assess and meet the needs of fellow students in the area of study skills and strategies Specific Terms of Employment: - Expected to attend paid training (in August, and sometimes January) prior to classes. Room and board provided during training periods that occur outside of traditional room and board times. Additional training possible during the academic year. - Expected to work at least one hour each day of the week in the office (Monday – Friday) when offices are open. - Expected to work between 7-10 hours per week during office hours, flexibility with class schedules provided. Remote work will be individually negotiated. - Expected to attend selected events, some during evenings and weekends. - Must maintain good academic standing. - Must remain a positive role model. - Must prioritize this position over other campus employment. General Duties of all Learning Assistants: - Develop new ideas, projects, and services to enhance work of the LEADS and DOS offices. - Present to groups or provide information individually on academic enrichment topics such as time management, study skills, note-taking, stress reduction and student life topics, as needed. - Provide excellent customer service, on the phone, in-person and online. - Provide office support (copy, errands, poster distribution, pick up mail, attend to emails, etc.) - Check email and office mail box for daily inter-office communications. - Assist other LAs and staff members with projects as needed. - Attend weekly office staff meetings and beginning of semester training sessions. - Keep records and appropriate paperwork as assigned. - Complete special projects as assigned. - Maintain a clean and orderly working environment.
